The Dreamlife of Georgie Stone

“I was frustrated because I wanted them to understand that I’m a girl,” says Georgie, 9, “…I feel like a girl inside.”

Insight at such a young age is just part of the Georgie Stone viewers who came to know her, mostly through her Neighbors Role as Mackenzie Hargreaves.

But Stone has a far more important side than her soapie contribution, which is revealed in the new Netflix documentary The Dream Life of Georgie Stone.

As an advocate for transgender children, Stone was the youngest person to receive hormone blockers in Australia.

But these laws required court cases before they could be approved. Such legal hurdles have been traumatic for individuals and families who have already faced multiple pressures.

The short film by director Maya Newell (Growing Up Gayby, Gayby Baby, In My Blood It Runs) and a fight by her family to overturn laws.

“Legislation through Parliament is our last hope, so please help us,” pleads Mother Rebekah.

The film benefits from home videos recorded by parents and actors Greg Stone and Rebekah Robertson. It also focuses heavily on the day of the gender confirmation surgery.

It’s a day of mixed feelings for Georgie.

“I don’t have the body I want, but I’m still female. I just don’t want this surgery to change me…I still want to be Georgie,” she reveals.

When she undergoes surgery, the film cleverly juxtaposes childhood photos to show Stone’s journey up to this moment.

There are glimpses of the struggles Georgie faced, such as hiding in a cubicle at school, being accepted by her twin brother Harry, who at the age of just 8 agreed to keep Georgie’s identity a secret.

It’s clear there’s also a loving, supportive family that clearly helps Georgie grow up into such a grounded, articulate young woman – she was awarded an OAM in 2020. And the family must have sacrificed much for the medical costs involved, but which are not recognized.

For TV fans who Neighbors The involvement is brief, as Stone talks to writers about their experiences in hopes of storylines and production involvement. But one gets the feeling that acting is just a small part of a much bigger picture for this amazing young woman in her quest to become her true self and make the path easier for others.

A specialist at the Royal Children’s Hospital reminds her: “We will always remember that it was you, Georgie, who fought it first.”

The Dreamlife of Georgie Stone will be shown on Netflix on Thursday.
