Texas has plenty of reasons to be optimistic about its improvement under Steve Sarkisian as a sophomore after a narrow 20-19 loss to Alabama last weekend. Naturally, that catapulted the Crimson Tide from #1 to #2 in the AP Top 25 ranking. But the No. 21 Longhorns have little time to relax as they face a Week 3 matchup with UTSA, favorites to win the Conference USA title, on Saturday. The Roadrunners are en route to Austin, Texas and appear more than ready to give Texas another tough out-of-conference challenge in front of their fans.

It’s not often that teams lose a game and enter the AP Top 25 poll, but that’s exactly what happened with Texas this week. The Longhorns defense then held no. 1 Alabama was in check most of the game, and were it not for starting quarterback Quinn Ewers leaving the game with an injury and substitute Hudson Card struggling with a nagging injury of his own, they could have pulled off an amazing upset. With Ewers out for at least a few weeks, Card’s status as a kickoff against UTSA approaches should be monitored.

In the first two games of the season, the Roadrunners did nothing but star in white-knuckle thrillers. UTSA has gone into overtime with Houston and Army, losing to the former and beating the latter. The Roadrunners could potentially make things interesting this weekend in Austin.

Here’s how fans can get in the mood for this fascinating in-state fight between the Longhorns and Roadrunners on Saturday.

Hudson card, Texas QB: Card replaced Ewers in Texas’ loss to Alabama, and he was struggling with an ankle injury himself. He played well enough to keep the Longhorns in contention, but he was clearly tied. Considering Card plays well when he can move, it will be interesting to see how well that ankle holds up in a tough test against UTSA. If the knuckle is still constraining the map, this game has the potential to get interesting.

Frank Harris, UTSA QB: Harris is the engine that makes this Roadrunners offensive run. In two games, Harris has completed 68.2% of his passes for 696 yards, six touchdowns and just one interception. Harris also has the ability to influence the game with his legs and currently leads the UTSA with 93 rushing yards. A double threat signal caller like Harris could be a handful for the Texas defense, even after an impressive display against the Crimson Tide.

DeMarvion exaggerated, Texas LB: One of the players Texas will lean on to make sure Harris doesn’t do too much damage is Overshown. He recorded five tackles against Alabama and leads the team with 13 total. Overshown, a five-year senior, is the leader of this Longhorns defense, and he needs to be all over the field to slow down a Roadrunners offense that’s averaging 38 points per game early on.

Texas vs. UTSA prediction

Featured Game | Texas Longhorns vs. UTSA Roadrunners

This is a potential trap game for the Longhorns, but I think they are pulling out the win. However, Card’s status makes me hesitant to pick Texas as a 12.5-point favorite. Card is at his best when playing with his legs and the ankle injury could limit that part of his game. Additionally, Jeff Traylor’s side have plenty of motivation against one of the Big 12’s flagship institutions. Texas gets the win, but the Roadrunners mark. Forecast: UTSA +12.5
