Meghan’s relations with the royal family have been notoriously strained since she and Prince Harry stepped down from royal duties and relocated to their native country, the United States.

But in a widely publicized television interview with Oprah Winfrey in March 2021 – in which Meghan was roundly scathing about “The Firm” – she claimed the Queen had “always been wonderful” to her.

“She was always warm and welcoming and really welcoming,” Markle told Oprah.

Describing one of her first engagements to the late monarch – in 2018, just a month after she married Harry – the Duchess of Sussex said: “We had breakfast together that morning and she gave me a beautiful gift and I just have it loved to be in her company.

“We sat in the car between appointments. And she has a blanket that’s over her knees to warm them and it was cold and she said, Meghan, come on, and put that over my knees too.

The gift Meghan was referring to was a set of diamond and pearl earrings and a matching necklace, which she wore in honor during the procession of the Queen’s coffin to Westminster Hall on September 14.

For her part, the Queen issued a statement two days after the Oprah interview, saying, “The whole family is saddened to learn the full extent of how challenging the past few years have been for Harry and Meghan.”

She ended the brief statement by saying, “Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be dearly loved family members.”

Meghan hasn’t made an official statement about the Queen’s death, but she has paused her Archetypes podcast.

Producers also reviewed upcoming episodes, trying to remove any content that could be construed as offensive after the monarch’s death.

“New episodes of Archetypes are being paused during the official period of mourning for Her Majesty The Queen Elizabeth II,” the streaming platform Spotify said in a statement.
