It appears that the Tom’s Guide Award-winning Google Nest WiFi is getting a Pro version, and it’s suspected that it will indeed be coming very soon.
Although new hardware hasn’t been announced by Google, B&H (opens in new tab) has skipped the gun and listed several variants of a product called “Google Nest Wifi Pro 6E Router” on its website.
As the name suggests, the main difference is the adoption of the latest WiFi 6E standards, which means speeds of up to 9.6 Gbps in perfect conditions. However, the real benefit is not so much speed as the additional bandwidth provided, which should result in less interference between devices. That certainly comes in handy for Google’s ever-expanding smart home plans, where Nest-branded doorbells, thermostats, smoke detectors, smart speakers, smart screens, and security cameras are all competing for the same bandwidth.
No images are provided, but it would be surprising if it differed dramatically from the “big plastic marshmallow” described by Brian Nadel in our original Nest WiFi review.
This review was pretty glowing as Google offers the best mesh WiFi router. “Google’s Nest WiFi mesh networking kit makes a virtue of being small while providing enough mesh networking performance for the typical home and an interactive expansion speaker,” Nadel wrote. “It’s easy to set up and use, and the best mesh WiFi system we’ve seen.”
The new version will apparently come in four different colors – Snow, Linen, Fog or Lemongrass – and a single will set you back $199, with double and triple packs going for $299 and $399 respectively. There’s even a multi-colored three-pack if you like to mix and match.
While bundling makes it cheaper, it’s worth noting that this price is still higher than previous generations. The original Nest WiFi router was $169 in 2019 before dropping to $99 for the newly launched 2020 version. We’ll have to test it ourselves before we can say if it’s worth the extra dollars (provided this isn’t a fake placeholder price, of course).
No release date is listed, but the invitation is given (opens in new tab) Specifically mentioning “additions to the Nest smart home portfolio” alongside the well-publicized Pixel 7 and Pixel Watch at the Google event on October 6th, we imagine we won’t have to wait long. Especially since the invitation also stated that “all devices will be available on the same day”…
