India’s top business leaders talk environment, economy and ethics


gurugram: The Great Lakes Institute of Management, Gurgaon, one of the country’s leading business schools, recently hosted Sapience 2022, its annual Management Conclave on Sustainability: Balancing the 3 E’s: Business, Environment and Ethics. Under the heading of author, educator, business consultant and Padma Bhushan recipient Dr. Mrityunjay Athreya, senior leaders, spoke about the balance between three core aspects of sustainability – economic, environmental and ethics, which serve as a framework that companies can use to develop. test and evaluate their business strategies.

dr Athreya stressed that the environment must be our top priority: “The mantra of sustainability must inform our awareness, our planning, our planning of actions and our control at every step. India is a rapidly growing economy. We need to focus on our potential as a growing economy over the next 10-20 years, but subject to a healthy environment. Whatever economic growth we can achieve, it must be under one unchanging condition: green economy. We can’t afford to have some kind of economic growth with high carbon pollution. We have to work on the energy front, on economic growth and on ethics at the same time.”

As global perceptions change, sustainability is becoming a must for businesses. Sustainability, supported by the pillars of economy, ecology and social affairs, ensures protection of the environment and economic stability. The consultations at Sapience dealt extensively with these aspects. Panel discussions on various tracks also highlighted important concepts.

In a panel discussion on human resources and organizational behavior, panellists discussed why creating a workplace that encourages discussion about sustainable development has become important. According to Vineeta Kukreti, Senior Director-HR, Fiserv, “Care is a currency these days. The pandemic has resulted in a large-scale organizational culture reset. Also the way organizations demonstrate their care or value proposition as an employer has changed in terms of care.” Neeti Kumar, VP & Head-HR, Adda 247 added: “Sustainability means we focus on Focus on your purpose and you grow, and everything that comes later. As an employee, that means you have to be good on the inside.” In the same panel, Alvin David, Head-Campus Hiring and Employer Branding, Newgen Software, shared: “We need a sustainable employee because of the type of challenges they throw at us hybrid labor in relation to maintaining our well-being. Being.”

For the Marketing Track discussion, executives came together to talk about the challenges an industry faces in adopting sustainability as a strategy. While Abhinav Chamoli, Strategy & Trust Transformation at Grand Thornton Bharat LLP, emphasized “finding alternative ways of doing things to encourage a culture of sustainability”; Kunal Kapoor, VP Client Engagement & Delivery, Merkle Sokrati said: “Take, Make and Waste is a linear evolution of marketing. We need to remove waste from the equation through reuse and recycling so that the linear model of business development becomes cyclical.” Rajeev Sinha, CEO and co-founder of OnlyGood shared: “We need to make sustainability a competitive advantage. Sustainability gives you a head start, an advantage over other companies.” Concluding the panel, Sumit Kumar Singh, Product Growth & Gamification, Microsoft stated: “Minimalism, a more sensitive lifestyle, would be really easy for Indians to embrace because it’s in our DNA. We have a tradition of inheriting items from one generation to another. So for us it has always existed. We just have to recognize it.”

Speaking to the audience on finance and sustainability, Sanjay Sharda, Executive VP & National Partner (Snergy), IndusInd Bank said: “Sustainability starts with ethics and compliance. If you act ethically, no one will cut you, but if you try to cut corners, you’ll get cut yourself, and very quickly.” Strategic lead Kaushik Acharya said, “There’s a lot more to the changing business landscape, in where we are, and it has been flooded. The basic concept of expanding at this scale was a mistake of my generation.” Vaibhav Mangal, Associate Director-Taxation, Perfetti Van Melle emphasized ethics to set the right tone and CA Shailesh Churiwala, founder of R2i2 Labs emphasized the Application of sustainability in environmental, social and governance areas.

Vibhu Goenka, VP, EXL, spoke at the conclave on analytics and sustainability: “The type of data deluge we’ve seen both offline and online, particularly in the last few years, has enabled AI to provide much more sophisticated and accurate solutions. Ajay Davessar, MD, Lavessta Enterprise, provided a contrary thought, saying, “Research shows that about 75% of goals would benefit from AI and 35% of goals would be inhibited by promoting AI in the world.” In the panel Said Saksham Malik, program manager of The Dialogue, “If you grow industries like data mining solutions and consent managers there, we have a good opportunity to attract new investment.” Abhineet Bothra, Strategy Lead, Comviva concluded, “Data Analytics must be successful and scalable. It must be interoperable. It has to be open-ended and we don’t have to just focus on description where we just analyze the data to get results.”

On the subject of entrepreneurship, Saurabh Singh, Co-Founder and CEO of Desmania Innovations Labs said, “What makes a product different is how it helps customers. When this core value is used as a guiding principle in product development, we can achieve sustainability.” Monika Gupta, Founder and Director of InteractivBees shared her thoughts: “These are VUCA times: volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous. To thrive in these times we must: be grounded in our values, have a good understanding of the ecosystem, develop clarity about complex things and be willing to deal with ambiguity.” Closing the session, Chand Seth, Chairman of Pearl Polymer, said : “Reinvention is very important to avoid failure. People need to be motivated because they are fundamental to the functioning of the organism.”

In the closing panel discussion on corporate sustainability through operations, Avijit Das, MD and CEO of Everready, and Founder and Chairman of Premas Biotech called for action to “build a mindset and awareness of sustainability,” while Rakesh Sharma, SVP – Tata Teleservices, said that anything and everything must pass through the principles of DIKW (Data, Information, Knowledge and Wisdom) as a paradigm in order to change the world. In the same panel Shubhra Puri, Founder of Gurgaon First said: “Sustainability is a way of life, a way of expression. It preserves the resources for our future generations, but actually it is a life based on ethics and environmental protection.” Shruti Arora, Director of PWc added: “The industry needs to focus on education, training and not just theirs to focus on our own employees to sustain this growth in learning.”
