crop monitoring and automation without electricity or Internet

Lualtek is an initiative of Alessio and Luca Occhipinti, young starter-uppers who have dreamed up a system that can be integrated anywhere, does not require installation and implements machine learning via LoRaWAN, that is a radio technology to monitor and communicate data at long distances low energy consumption.

The system enables control of environmental and substrate values and automation of any device (no frost, irrigation, closing and opening of dams, etc.) through monitoring sensors. It also works without a connection to the internet or mains electricity.

A year after its launch, five companies have chosen to install the Lualtek system, choosing to focus on technological innovation and energy saving, a topic of great importance given the price increases of recent months and the not so positive future prospects . In addition, the reduced time and labor costs help to significantly reduce production costs.

Lualtek’s advanced algorithm has made it possible to optimize production and reduce consumption of water, energy and fertilizers. After a year of use, contractors have used 15% less electricity and 40% less water and seen a 20% increase in production. These numbers are not only important when it comes to savings, but also for environmental sustainability.”

The project was also extremely successful with investors and venture capitalists in Italy and abroad: some entrepreneurs saw great potential in Lualtek when it comes to sustainability and improved productivity and decided to invest in it. Lualtek was therefore able to raise its capital and launched a first round of equity raising worth €300,000. In the meantime, foreign investors and some large agricultural companies from South America have also expressed their interest.

These first funds will allow the start-up to strengthen its development and sales teams. Lualtek is currently working to enable AI and machine learning by the end of 2022. These technologies will alert entrepreneurs to the possible development of diseases, but will also suggest changes to automations to improve production.

“We started our experimental project in summer 2020 in a berry greenhouse and the success was immediate with tangible results. We decided to found the start-up in March 2021 and the first orders came soon after,” explains Luca Occhipinti.

“A greenhouse with monitoring and automation sensors is nothing new, but software that sends constantly updated data and allows setting appropriate crop selections is. In addition, it works without electricity and without the Internet and does not require any installation, so it can be installed inexpensively even in companies with a low technological level Programming can be done via mobile phone, PC or any device Sensors and actuators are highly innovative and are installed directly by us, therefore not yet available purchase”, adds Alessio Occhipinti.
